Fancy a trip like no other?

We invite all pilots to join us on the 4th October for a trip down across the Southern Atlantic Ocean, to explore one of Earth's hidden continents, one rarely flown to, Antarctica!
Depart Cape Town between 1100z-1300z before setting off on the voyage down the ocean, before hitting the beauties of Antarctica, landing on the famous Wolf's Fang Runway after an expedition of 5 hours!

This is a trip you do not want to miss!

Q: Do I require an Oceanic Clearance before entering Johannesburg Oceanic:
A: No - there is no requirement for an oceanic clearance. Pilots will file their routing and intended cruise level, and we will separate you coming into the sector or issue new levels as required to ensure lateral separation with other aircraft.

Q: Does FAJO have CPDLC/SELCAL capabilities?
A: Both FACA and FAJO will have CPDLC available for the event. FAJO will exclusively also have SELCAL capabilities for the event. Before you connect to VATSIM, make sure you input this in, so as when we conduct our initial SELCAL check, you are able to hear it! You will need to remain on the Oceanic frequency, and not have vPilot muted in order to receive the SELCAL transmission should you be summoned by a controller by SELCAL.

Once in Oceanic Airspace, if CPDLC-equipped, CPDLC will become the primary source of communication, but it is still recommended to keep a listening watch on frequency, as some instructions cannot be transmitted by CPDLC.

Q: Are there restrictions on what aircraft I can fly?
A: We highly advise flying only subsonic aircraft for the event. Whilst we can accommodate supersonic, you may be put on restrictions for the event or may miss out on ATC coverage as a result.

Q: Will there be ATC in Wolf's Fang?
A: We will have ATC stations available in Wolf's Fang operating Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS).

The AFIS unit at Wolf's Fang will be responsible for telling you:

Meteorological Information
Current Runway In Use
Other Aircraft within the Vicinity

But an AFIS will not be able to issue you direct instructions on what to do. It is the pilot's responsibility to make their own decisions (landing, take off, maneuvers) when flying into Wolf's Fang, under the advice of the AFIS unit. Once vacated, the pilot should follow the instructions of the AFIS controller on parking.

Arrival Example:

A/C: Wolf's Fang Information, HFM2025, Airbus A340-300, 50 miles WF17I for Runway 17

WFI: HFM2025, Wolf's Fang Information, Runway 17 in use, transition level 100, QNH 1008, traffic to affect is an Airbus A320 20 miles ahead for Runway 17, next report 10 miles inbound WF17I. Do you require the latest METAR report?

A/C: Copy traffic, Runway 17, TL100, QNH is 1008, and affirm require latest METAR report, reporting 10 miles inbound WF17I.

WFI: (metar report issued)

A/C: HFM2025 is 10 miles inbound WF17I

WFI: HFM2025, thank you, report final Runway 17, traffic to affect now on a 10 mile final for RW17.

A/C: We will report final next, HFM2025

A/C: Final approach, HFM2025

WFI: HFM2025 roger, surface wind (wind), runway is free, report vacated,

A/C: Wilco

NOTE: WFI will not issue you a direct cleared to land instruction. The runway may be occupied, but you may still continue your approach at your discretion, and the AFIS controller will inform you once the preceding aircraft has left the vicinity of the runway.

A/C: Vacated RWY17, HFM2025

WFI: HFM2025, taxi right of the runway to parking, thanks for flying!
