Depart from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (UHSS) — the Land of Ice. Make sure your de-icing system is working, the Sea of Okhotsk is unforgiving of frozen Pitot tubes. Your destination is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (UHPP)—"Tierra del Fuego." This is home to nuclear submarines, hungry bears, and active volcanoes. What to expect: "Ice" - snow, frost, and crosswinds upon departure. A crossing of the dark waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. "Fire" - a scenic but dangerous approach surrounded by volcanic peaks. Soundtrack: a concert of ATC instructions and your GPWS shouting "TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP."
