With Spring upon us and the mountains thawing away their winter garb, how better to celebrate our iconic Alps than with a new edition of our ever popular “Staff The Minors”? This new “Cross The Alps” edition presents a challenge that will entice you and put even the most experienced pilots to the test. So join us in welcoming the springtime sun and visit LSGS, LSZA and LSZS for some of the most beautiful sights and complex procedures our mountains have to offer.
Sion – LSGS (Charts | Scenery)
The Rhone valley is home to more than just breath-taking views and skiing destinations; surrounded by the towering peaks is Sion airport. So take your favourite GA aircraft and enjoy VFR flying and unique views, or perhaps opt for a bizjet and tackle the steep IGS or winding RNP approaches. But with a tight apron and narrow taxiways, best leave your airliners at home and be sure to have your charts on hand.
Lugano – LSZA (Charts | Scenery)
On the shore of a world-famous lake and near a historic city, Lugano is impossible to miss. But do not get too distracted by its natural charm and iconic sights, this airport boasts one of the steepest approaches in Europe as well as complex circling procedures and intricate airspaces. So prepare diligently and focus intently; Lugano is the ideal destination for pilots looking for excitement and complexity.
Samedan – LSZS (Charts | Scenery)
Speaking of excitement, how about visiting the second highest airport in Europe? Carefully nestled among dramatic snow-peaked mountains, Samedan offers daunting terrain and oftentimes challenging weather. Fly your approach in the thin mountain air as you navigate between tall summits and sheer drops flying difficult procedures sure to keep seasoned aviators on their toes.
Arguably one of the more trying editions yet, we’re calling all skilled and adventurous pilots to enjoy some of the most unique views in Europe. Our skilled ATCOs are eager and ready for a challenge – are you? If so, join us this Sunday 16th from 12:00z to 15:00z in Swiss airspace!
